Trainee Searcher

Opportunity

Could you help search for a missing vulnerable person? If you are reasonably fit, enjoy being out of doors and would like to do something to benefit the community then this could be the opportunity for you.

Hampshire Search and Rescue provides trained volunteers to assist police in searching for missing vulnerable people anywhere in Hampshire at any time of the day or night.

We are looking for volunteers from Hampshire who can be available at fairly short notice, as the need arises, to help search and rescue teams.

We are a very closely knit unit with a good team spirit and a good level of support from Hampshire police. Some clothing and equipment is provided but members are expected to bring their own personal items such as compass, walking boots, torch etc.

There is a weekend training course for operational members covering basic search techniques and procedures such as crime scene preservation, missing person behaviour etc. Ongoing training in all these as well as first aid, navigation, radio operation, health and safety etc.

Volunteers need to be aware that we sometimes find people in distressing circumstances e.g. in need of urgent medical attention, or possibly deceased. We sometimes have to deal with distressed relatives, members of the public and press so discretion and a professional manner are essential.

Support, guidance and on-going training is given to all volunteers. Due to the nature of our operations and exercises it would be extremely difficult to cater for wheelchair users on operations. However, we would welcome applications from physically disabled volunteers for support positions.

Skills

No specific skills or experience are required as full training will be given in subjects such as navigation, radio operation, basic life support, search techniques etc.

Volunteers should be able to work well in teams and have a flexible attitude.  A reasonable degree of physical fitness is required (able to walk five miles carrying rucksack or similar in under two hours).

Minimum age 18 years, must pass DBS enhanced check.

Must have transport (for callouts, although car sharing may be a possbility for training) and a mobile phone.
