Answering and responding to telephone calls from adults who have experienced sexual violation or abuse, no matter how long ago it happened. This is essentially an empathetic listening service.
The next 5 day training for helpline volunteers will be Saturday and Sunday 20th and 21st October 2018, Saturday and Sunday 27th and 28th October 2018 and for those who are selected, the final day is Sunday 11th Nov 2018. This training is compulsory and is part of the selection process and applicants will be expected to attend every session in order to qualify.
Volunteers do not need to be available all of the times when the line is open (Monday 1pm to 3pm, Wednesday 7pm to 10pm and Friday 7pm to 10pm) but they need to be available some of them. They are expected to do at least two shifts per month on the line. Volunteers also attend supervision every other Tuesday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. This is a vital support for the work and is compulsory.
Volunteers need to be reliable and conscientious, good listeners, caring, empathetic and resilient about hearing emotional distress. They also have to be good supportive team players.
At present supervision is held in an upstairs room. We have no lift and steep stairs. However, it would be possible to move to a downstairs room if we had a disabled volunteer, and the phone lines are on the ground floor.
