Helpline Volunteer

Opportunity

Answering and responding to telephone calls from adults who have experienced sexual violation or abuse, no matter how long ago it happened. This is essentially an empathetic listening service.

The next 5 day training for helpline volunteers will be in October and November, and will be at weekends. This training is compulsory and is part of the selection process.

Volunteers do not need to be available all of the times when the line is open (Monday 1pm to 3pm, Wednesday 7pm to 10pm and Friday 7pm to 10pm) but they need to be available some of them. They are expected to do at least two shifts per month on the line. Volunteers also attend supervision every other Tuesday evening from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. This is a vital support for the work and is compulsory.


Skills

Volunteers need to be reliable and conscientious, good listeners, caring, empathetic and resilient about hearing emotional distress. They also have to be good supportive team players.
