The need for support in Hampshire is astonishing. It is estimated that each year, around 400 parents die in the county, leaving around 690 dependent children (aged 0 to 17 years). *

Overall, it is estimated that, of the current school-age population of children and young people (aged 5 to 16 years) in Hampshire who have been bereaved of a parent or sibling at some point in their childhood is circa 4370.*  (* Childhoodbereavementnetwork.org.uk)

We hold monthly “drop in” support groups (Sunday afternoons 1.30pm – 4.30pm) in Hilsea for any children aged 3-11 who have lost someone significant in their lives.  Committed volunteers are needed to help prepare and run these groups.  They are a fun and informal way of working with children and their families who have all been touched in some way by bereavement.

The sessions are themed on topics around bereavement and volunteers can be involved in planning and organising of the activities to meet the themes such as anger, memories, fears and worries.  These activities are aimed at supporting them through the bereavement process.  There are roles within the group that are more practical such as meeting and greeting the families, registering them and the most important person – the tea maker!

Volunteers need to be empathetic and patient and have the ability to encourage and support children through their bereavement.

The sessions run for 10 months of the year and volunteers are expected to commit to a minimum of 8 sessions to ensure we give families the right levels of support.
